      Firehorse Inspirations with Michelle Dennis

This is a DVD that challenges us to think about what we do with horses, and why, and poses the question 'What's in if for the horse?'
Michelle and her team of horses, ponies and donkeys give you a more than a glimpse at the possibilities when you take the time to really listen to what the horses want.
Horses are capable of understanding and doing much more if given the opportunity. With a little imagination, a few verbal and visual cues, and a few mintes a day with a heart-mind connection, and the ppossibilities are endless.

This is a beautifully and professionally presented DVD with over 100 minutes of inspiration and insight into how much fun you can have with horses. It is introduced and interspersed with thought provoking philosphies and questions from Michelle - my favourite being "Horses are masters at discerning energy and thoughts - all we have to do is master our energy and thoughts".
The footage was filmed over the changing seasons at Michelles property, showing you how healthy equines share herd life and time with Michelle. When you get your copy, remember to watch the 'Exceptional extras' available at the end. It shows the horses at play, grooming, feeding and resting, giving insights into herd behaviour with a diverse bunch of equines.

This is a DVD for those who want to blaze their own trails..... with happy horses.

Every copy you purchase goes towards the upkeep of rescued equines and educating people about the possibilities with horses. They are now available from the Natural Horse World Store

      - you can watch a Youtube preview of the DVD here.

Soft Touch Natural Hoof Care with Phil Morarre
This beautifully produced DVD is very easy to listen to and watch. Phil has a good clear way of describing barefoot hoofcare concepts such as: Why do people shoe?
    The mechanics of the hoof
    Problems and lameness
    Benefits of barefoot
    Making the transition
The interview style of presentation is interspersed with testimonials from trimmers and horse owners. It is a great introduction to trimming with power tools and Phil explains why you would benefit from using an angle grinder to trim and how this can help you learn to do it yourself. His philosphy is that each of the traditional hand tools require you to develop considerable technique and it takes time to learn how to use them effectively.
Using a grinder is actually very simple and cuts down on the learning time and number of techniques, plus there is less chance of making a mistake as the removal of hoof is very gradual (not necessarily so with nippers or knife for the less experienced!). As a bonus you also get the job done much faster and with less effort!

The real life instructional segment of the video shows how to tackle a maintenence trim . It essentially shows you a private lesson with a woman who had NEVER trimmed a hoof before.

Following is some feedback from a trimmer:

    " Hi Phil,
I wanted to let you know that I did get both my horses used to the angle grinder for hoof trims. I was having a little trouble with one of my horses but it only lasted through the first trim. Last night I went out and gave them both a quick trim. I did all 4 feet and didn’t even put halters on! Amazing. For me they actually do better when I don’t tie them up but when I didn’t even put the halters on last night I was surprised. That’s desensitization for you! Thanks for the tool. It has changed my trim schedule. I used to stew about it, put it off and resign myself to the job; I’d do two feet at a time because that’s all I had the energy and strength for. Now I zip through 8 feet in around 30 minutes. It’s the greatest. " Lori R. E. Washington

Other topics covered include Introducing the grinder to an anxious horse, leg handling and posture tips. One safety issue not mentioned is that of the trimmer's long hair being kept well out of the way. Even a pony tail swinging around can get dangerously close to the grinder!
Other safety tips were well covered and showed some nifty tools such as the tail tie bungie for keeping the horse's tail tied up and an instant on/off attachment lever for the grinder.

Using a grinder certainly expands the options for trimmers either doing many horses and physically suffering from that, or for those just not used to using the hand tools like hoof knives, nippers and rasps.
This DVD has certainly sparked my interest in giving it a go! You can purchase it direct from www.softouchnaturalhorsecare.com or See a Youtube intro by clicking here.
There is a lot of info on abrasive trimming available on the www with a yahooo discussion group and this article on an Introduction to Power Tool Trimming by James Welz.

Horse Playgrounds – Ideas for Creating and using your own horse playground.
This great DVD contains step-by-step detailed instructions showing how you can make your very own horse playground.
Build a pedestal, jumps, squeezes, car washes, a bridge, mailbox, highway mat, tunnels, teepee, mazes and more.
All the plans are simple to understand and include a list of materials that can be purchased at any home supply store.
The DVD shows how and why to use the obstacles along with some fun games to try on your own or with a group.
Then there is a Manual for constructing the playground items that you can print off for east reference. The measurements are all in US measures (inches, feet etc.) but it’s easy to convert them to metric.

I found the DVD well filmed and narrated, inspiring and helpful, especially when your creative or lateral thinking has run out!
It shows riders and horses of varying levels using the playground, and gives tips on how to best approach the challenges. It also has some fun footage of horses playing without the humans.

Wrangler Jayne’s Relaxed Riding Vol. 1

Wrangler Jayne’s Horsemanship With Heart Program now includes a 3 DVD set on riding. In this set Jayne introduces the foundation skills in the saddle, bareback and without a bit. She gives you detailed practical instruction that will build your confidence and help you be a gentler communicator.

This DVD set is a continuation of the Horsemanship with Heart Essentials 1,2 & 3 series on groundwork, and like them is very professionally presented.
Jayne’s in depth instruction is enhanced by demonstrating herself, then shows how she teaches a student to do the same on a different horse.

The filming and sound quality is excellent and as she talks through everything so thoroughly, you could even play the DVD in your laptop near the arena – it would be almost the same as having Jayne right there with you!
Her enthusiastic style keeps you interested through over 3 hours of instruction – it’s probably best to watch one DVD then practice, before going onto the next one.

Topics covered include polite saddling, mounting, getting moving, turning, stopping, yields, backup, riding through poles and along the fence. For just $79 this 3 DVD set represents excellent value for money and definitely one for those wanting a good start in riding their horse naturally and bitless.

THROUGH THE EYES OF THE HORSE with Carlos Tabernaberri
If you have read Carlos' book of the same name as the DVD - Through The Eyes of The Horse, or attended one of his clinics or lessons, you will find this DVD a valuable reference.
Carlos shows you his principles of Trust, Obedience and Respect with the first 91 minute DVD covering the fundamentals of groundwork.

DVD 2 runs for 86 minutes and shows the applications of these fundamentals right through to the basics of riding. It's good to see Carlos demonstrating with horses that are not polished, so the viewer can see how to deal with issues as they present.
The film and sound quality are excellent as is the content according to the following testimonials;

"I got the DVD on Friday and watched the first one on Friday night. I loved it !!!!!!!!! I was very impressed that on the dvd, you use horses that had the problem you were explaining how to fix. This shows your confidence in your ability and also helps the person watching it, to relate and improve their skills. I'm half way through the 2nd dvd and hope to be able to get my horse floating well and being a good boy by June. Thanks again." Katrina
.
"Have watched your DVD again, and I feel compelled to say more about it.
It really is an exceptional production in many ways. What struck me was how all aspects of the DVD, from the footage of you riding in the bush, to the music, to the voice overs, to you training the horses, all showed you living your philosophy, it was very unified and cohesive. What also came across strongly for me was seeing life from the horses perspective and the importance of a change in ourselves if we want to improve our relationship with our horses, not just trying a new technique, and that came across clearly when you were training the horses.
It was so unrehearsed, so honest, so from the heart, the voice overs in particular when you are riding in the bush. I have got so much already from listening to you. You have captured and portrayed the essence of your philosophy and 'good horsemanship'. Congratulations to you and Marty!" Patsy.
